WHAT DO PHARMACY CLERKS DO?

While the pharmacist is busy mixing medicines and measuring pills, pharmacy clerks work the registers at pharmacies, taking prescriptions for customers, handing completed orders to customers, recording shipments to the pharmacy and ringing up sales for customers. Pharmacy clerks make sure the pharmacy stays clean and organized, and that customers are happy and served in a quick manner.

WHAT ARE THE EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS?

You can get started as a pharmacy clerk with a high school diploma or equivalent. Training is done on-the-job.

JOB SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS

• Customer Service: Pharmacy clerks work directly with customers in person and on the phone. Being friendly and approachable and willing to help are important to the job.
• Communication: Pharmacy clerks need to have great listening and speaking skills, as they are often the go-between for customers and pharmacists, relaying information between the two parties.
• Clerical Skills: Pharmacy clerks must restock supplies and keep accurate records of what materials are coming in and going out of the pharmacy. In addition, they use cash registers and must be quick and accurate.
• Math: Pharmacy clerks must use basic mathematics when taking inventory and ringing up customers.
• Manage Prescription deliveries to patients.
• Must have a valid Drivers License and own a vehicle.
